University Hospital Bonn
Parent-Child Centre
"The garden is the smallest parcel of the world and yet at the same time, it is the whole world."
— Michel Foucault
The conceptual starting point of the site-specific art works is the poem "There is Another Sky" by the American poet Emily Dickinson. In her poem, Dickinson describes a peaceful other world, an evergreen garden with flowers that do not fade. Each hospital floor has a theme that through loose association, runs parallel to the stanzas in Dickinson’s poem releasing a wealth of individual associations.
The five large-scale wall paintings are the central artworks in the building and combine playful abstract and figurative forms. They are designed to enrich the high-traffic areas and meeting points on each floor filling patients and relatives with positivity and hope.
The Parent-Child Centre at the University Hospital on Bonn’s Venusberg Hill is one of the most modern children’s hospitals in Europe. The five-floor structure was planned with nearly 12,000 square metres of space for state-of-the-art children’s medicine and specialists in all disciplines.
